Usually, no automatic distance change is needed just because weeks have passed. The key variable is irradiance at the skin surface: moving closer raises it quickly, moving farther lowers it, and that changes the delivered dose and comfort. For home red and near-infrared panels, the more evidence-based approach is to keep distance consistent, then adjust only if your goal, heat, or skin response suggests the current setup is outside a reasonable therapeutic window.

Start With The Variable That Matters Most: Irradiance At The Skin

Distance matters because dose is built from power density over time, not from time alone. In practical terms, if you hold the session length steady and move the panel farther away, the skin gets less light; if you move closer, it gets more. Several reviews describe this inverse-square relationship and note that the effective window is narrow enough that too little or too much can reduce benefits.

For skin-focused sessions, the literature commonly places red-light panel use around 6 to 12 inches from the skin, with 20 to 100 mW/cm² measured at the skin surface in one review. A separate NIR review found beneficial cutaneous effects around 30 to 35 mW/cm², while warning that below a physiological threshold no benefit occurs and above it photo-inhibitory or deleterious effects can appear.

A simple planning example: if your panel gives a target dose at one distance, changing distance changes the dose unless you also change session time. That means “my skin is adapting” is not, by itself, a reason to move closer. It may just mean you should verify that your current distance is still delivering the intended surface irradiance.
