A single stationary panel can illuminate a large area of one side of your body, but it cannot provide even, direct coverage of your front, back, and sides at once. For the most useful no-move setup, choose one body-facing surface to prioritize, center the panel on that area, test a distance that covers the field you intend to expose, and set session time from irradiance measured at that same distance. If front-and-back exposure matters, use a separate stationary session for each side.

Can One Stationary Panel Cover the Entire Body?

Not in the sense of uniform, all-around exposure. A flat panel emits from one direction, while the body has curves, recessed areas, and surfaces facing away from the light.

It helps to separate three ideas:

  • Practical coverage: The panel visibly illuminates a broad area, such as much of the front or back of the body.
  • Irradiance uniformity: The light intensity is reasonably similar across that area.
  • Delivered dose: Each point receives the intended energy exposure over the selected session time.

These are not interchangeable. A wide visible glow does not confirm that the whole area receives the same irradiance or dose.

For example, one tested 30° panel with a 16 cm LED width cast about 50 cm of visible light on a wall 60 cm away, but its brighter central zone was only about 38 cm wide. Treat visible spread as a starting point for positioning---not as a map of the area receiving your target dose.

For a stationary session, "full-body" is therefore best understood as the largest practical area of one body side, not 360-degree exposure.

How Should I Set Panel Height, Distance, and Pose?

Start with the body side you want to treat: front or back. Then choose a pose you can hold comfortably and consistently for the entire timer.

A standing, seated, or lying position can work if it lets you keep the same panel-to-body geometry. The important steps are:

  1. Choose the priority area. Decide whether you are trying to cover the upper body, torso and legs, or another broad front- or back-facing field.
  2. Center the panel on that area. Align the middle of the panel with the body region that matters most rather than assuming every part of the body can receive equal exposure.
  3. Measure from the LED surface to the relevant skin location. Do not measure from the stand, wall, floor, or edge of a mat.
  4. Check the field at your chosen distance. Confirm that the areas you intend to expose are within the useful illuminated field while you are actually in position.
  5. Keep the pose stable. Avoid a setup that requires leaning, reaching, or changing orientation during the session.

Does Moving Farther Away Improve Coverage?

It can improve relative evenness across an illuminated field, but it also reduces peak irradiance. The trade-off is panel-specific.

In one four-panel test, peak irradiance measured 84 mW/cm² at 6 inches and 61 mW/cm² at 24 inches. Meanwhile, the low-output point between panels improved from 18% of peak irradiance at 6 inches to 72% at 24 inches.

That does not make 24 inches a universal recommendation. It illustrates why a close setup can produce a high reading at the center while leaving lower-output zones elsewhere across the body. Test your own panel and position rather than relying on a beam-angle label or a single center-point irradiance figure.

A practical decision rule is simple:

  • Choose a closer position when the prioritized area fits within the tested field and the measured irradiance supports your planned time.
  • Evaluate a farther position when broader, relatively more even coverage matters more than the highest central irradiance.
  • Use a separate orientation for the opposite side rather than assuming a longer session can reach body surfaces facing away from the panel.

How Do I Calculate Session Time at the Chosen Distance?

Calculate time only after you have usable irradiance information for the location you are treating at your actual panel-to-skin distance.

To calculate time in seconds:

  1. Take your selected target dose in J/cm².
  2. Multiply that number by 1,000.
  3. Divide the result by irradiance in mW/cm² measured at the intended body location.

For a hypothetical example, suppose irradiance at the treatment point is 50 mW/cm² and the selected target dose is 10 J/cm²:

Multiply dose by 1,000 10 × 1,000 = 10,000
Divide by irradiance 10,000 ÷ 50 = 200 seconds
Convert to minutes 3 minutes 20 seconds

This result estimates energy delivered at that measured point. It does not establish that 10 J/cm² is the right target, prove that other body areas receive the same dose, or account for lower-output zones near panel edges, gaps, or curved body surfaces.

Before using an irradiance number, document:

  • The exact panel-to-skin distance
  • The meter type and whether it is suitable for the wavelengths measured
  • The measurement method
  • The location measured within the treatment field
  • Whether the stated number is a center reading or represents multiple points

Do Red and Near-Infrared Light Need Different Positions?

Do not assume that red and near-infrared settings automatically require different distances or exposure times simply because the wavelengths differ. For a stationary full-body setup, the key technical issue remains the irradiance at the treatment location and the intended dose.

Positioning should first solve the geometry problem: which body side and area are directly facing the panel, how evenly that field is illuminated, and whether the chosen distance can be repeated. Timing should then be based on documented irradiance at that setup.

What is the Repeatable No-Move Setup Checklist?

Use this checklist before starting the timer:

  • [ ] Choose one body side to treat: front or back.
  • [ ] Select a stable standing, seated, or lying pose you can maintain without repositioning.
  • [ ] Center the panel on the body region you prioritize.
  • [ ] Measure the distance from the LEDs to the relevant skin location.
  • [ ] Check that the intended area fits within the practical illuminated field.
  • [ ] Verify irradiance at the actual distance and measurement location.
  • [ ] Calculate a conservative session time from your intended dose and measured irradiance.
  • [ ] Keep the panel stable, maintain clearance around the setup, and route cords so they do not interfere with entering or leaving the position.
  • [ ] Monitor heat and comfort throughout the session.
