There is no single proven irradiance level for every post-workout session. The practical starting point is your device's verified irradiance at the distance you will actually use, not a headline output number measured under different conditions.

Once you have that number, use it to calculate the exposure time needed for a conservative intended dose. Do not extend a session or raise intensity simply because a muscle feels sore.

Start with Irradiance at Your Actual Treatment Distance

Irradiance is the light power reaching an area of skin, usually expressed as milliwatts per square centimeter (mW/cm²).

It is different from dose, also called fluence, which is the total light energy delivered over time and is expressed as joules per square centimeter (J/cm²).

For a post-workout setup, confirm these details in your device instructions before calculating a session:

  • The stated irradiance in mW/cm²
  • The distance at which that irradiance was measured
  • Whether that distance matches where you plan to stand or sit
  • The manufacturer's operating and comfort instructions

A device's output figure is only useful for planning if it applies at your treatment distance. If the documentation gives an irradiance number without the measurement conditions, do not assume that number represents what reaches your body during your session.

Convert Irradiance Into Session Time

Dose depends on both irradiance and time:

Dose in J/cm² equals irradiance in mW/cm² multiplied by time in seconds, then divided by 1,000.

In plain terms, a higher verified irradiance reaches the same calculated dose in less time; a lower irradiance requires more time.

A Calculation Example

If irradiance at your chosen distance is 100 mW/cm² and exposure lasts 200 seconds, the calculated dose is 20 J/cm².

That is a math example---not a recommended post-workout target, safety threshold, or recovery protocol.

Use the calculation as a planning tool:

  1. Keep the device at the distance used for its verified irradiance specification.
  2. Choose a conservative session time consistent with the device's instructions.
  3. Recalculate if you change the distance, because the irradiance value you are using may no longer apply.

The calculation is only as reliable as the irradiance measurement behind it.

Avoid Treating "More" as the Goal

After a demanding workout, it can be tempting to increase session length or intensity for a sore area. That approach turns a useful setup variable into guesswork.

Instead, keep your distance and time deliberate. A longer session changes the total delivered dose. Moving closer can also make a distance-specific irradiance figure inapplicable. Warmth or stronger sensation is not a reason by itself to increase exposure.

The useful question is not, "What is the highest setting I can use?" It is, "What irradiance is verified at this distance, and what amount of time am I intentionally using?"

Keep Post-Workout Use in Perspective

Photobiomodulation has been studied in healthy people in connection with muscular performance and exercise-associated fatigue, including in a systematic review and meta-analysis. That does not establish one universal post-workout irradiance, session length, or timing routine.

Treat a post-training session as an optional part of your personal recovery routine, not as a substitute for evaluating a possible injury. Ordinary training soreness and a concerning symptom are not the same situation.

Post-Workout Setup Checklist

Before establishing a routine:

  • Confirm the irradiance listed for your intended treatment distance.
  • Keep that distance consistent throughout the session.
  • Use irradiance and time to estimate total dose rather than guessing from a device's maximum output.
  • Start conservatively and reassess comfort and skin response.
  • Do not increase time or intensity simply because you are sore.
  • Treat persistent, severe, or injury-like symptoms as a reason to seek appropriate evaluation rather than self-manage with light exposure.
